How Many Canadians Have Had a Threesome? More Than You'd Guess
Threesomes have a reputation as something other people do. Something from films, holidays abroad and stories told three drinks in. The Canadian numbers tell a very different story: threesomes are common, and the appetite for them is bigger still. Somewhere near you, right now, people are planning one.
Here's what the numbers say, and what they mean if you're thinking about it.
Almost a Quarter Have Done It
The headline figure comes from a national survey of around a thousand sexually active Canadians aged 18 to 49. It found that 22% had already had sex with more than one person at the same time.
That's a striking number. Take any room of Canadian adults under 50 and, by that measure, around one in five has been in a threesome. Look around the next bar you walk into and do the math.
And Almost a Third More Would Jump at the Chance
The same survey found another 29% who hadn't done it but said they would jump at the chance. Put the two together and you get a picture that surprises most people: roughly half of sexually active Canadians in that age group have either had a threesome or want one.
That's not a niche. That's a very large group of people who, until recently, had no obvious way to find each other.
The Wanting-Doing Gap
University research points the same way. One Canadian study of students found that 82% of men and 31% of women would be up for a threesome if they got the chance, but only 13% had actually had a mixed-sex threesome.
A follow-up study of 274 heterosexual undergraduates at a midsize Canadian university found that 24% of men and 8% of women had already had a threesome of some kind. The pattern across both is the same: interest far outstrips experience. People want it; they just haven't worked out how to make it happen.
What Canadians Actually Want From a Threesome
The research also reveals some clear preferences. In the Canadian studies, men were twice as likely to be interested in a threesome with two women as in one with a man and a woman. Both men and women said they'd prefer a threesome with people they knew rather than strangers, and women expressed that preference more strongly than men.
That last point matters. It suggests the best threesomes start with a bit of familiarity: some chat, a drink, a sense of who the other people are. It's exactly why getting to know people before you meet works so well. If two women and a man is your dream, our FFM guide is built around that finding.
The Fantasy Is Almost Universal
Fantasy research from Quebec goes further: having sex with two women turned out to be one of just five fantasies considered statistically typical among men, endorsed by more than 84% of the men studied.
In other words, if you've fantasized about a threesome, you're not unusual. You're closer to normal than the person who hasn't.
Couples Want to Play More Than They Admit
A lot of threesomes start with a couple deciding to open the bedroom door, just a crack. A nationally representative survey of Canadian adults found that 12% said an open relationship would be their ideal, three times the 4% of partnered Canadians actually in one, and one in five had been in an open relationship at some point. Another national poll found 37% of Canadians consider open or polyamorous partnerships acceptable.
In plain terms: a lot of Canadian couples are curious about sharing, and only a fraction have acted on it. For many, a threesome is the thrilling first step. One night, one extra person, and a secret the two of them smile about for months.
Turning a Statistic Into a Saturday Night
Numbers are fun, but nobody ever had a threesome with a percentage. The people behind these figures are real: the couple two streets over who've talked about it for a year, the single woman who's been curious since university, the guy who'd be thrilled to be invited in and knows how to behave when he is.
The only difference between the people in the statistics and the people having the fun is that the second group found each other. That part takes about five minutes to start.
What It All Means for You
Put the numbers together and the picture is simple. A lot of Canadians have had a threesome. Even more want one. The main things standing in the way are knowing where to meet the right people and feeling comfortable asking.
